On the road to Ait Benhaddou

Join us on a captivating journey through Morocco aboard our private minivan, as we embark towards Ait Ben Haddou. Along the way, our expert guide will enlighten us with fascinating insights about this remarkable country. The highlight of today's excursion undoubtedly lies in the scenic route, as we depart from the city and venture into the awe-inspiring desert landscapes of Morocco. En route to our destination, we'll traverse a mountain pass that presents breathtaking vistas of the Atlas range - it may sound unbelievable, but in certain parts of Morocco, snow can even be spotted at times!

The first kasbah is never forgotten!

Our journey leads us to our first destination, Ait Ben Haddou, the inaugural kasbah of our trip! Kasbahs are fortified cities, and this one, in particular, holds the honour of being one of the 9 sites in Morocco recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The sight of this city is nothing short of spectacular, featuring towering turrets and clusters of structures built with natural materials, including the iconic red mud that lends it its distinctive hue. Ait Ben Haddou blends seamlessly with its surroundings, and we take our time to thoroughly explore the kasbah before indulging in our first dinner together.

Exploring the gorges

Continuing our quest to uncover the hidden gems of Morocco, we embark on yet another day of travel, covering several killometers on the road. So, let's sit back and enjoy the breathtaking vistas that unfold outside our window! As we bid adieu to Ait Ben Haddou, we set our sights on Merzouga - our final destination for the day. Along the way, we pass through El Kelaa M'Gouna, fondly referred to as the "city of roses", where they produce exquisite fragrances. We may even take a short break here to indulge in some rejuvenation. Next, we drive past the Todra and Dades Gorges - mesmerizing locations where towering red rock walls rise for meters upon meters, creating a striking canyon-like landscape.

Sahara, here we are!

As we journey towards our destination, we encounter numerous kasbahs and ksours (castles) along the way, providing us with ample opportunities to experience the renowned Moroccan hospitality. Our expedition eventually leads us to Erg Chebbi, where we bid adieu to our trusty minivan and venture into the Sahara desert. Here, in Merzouga, we switch modes of transportation yet again, opting for a more traditional method of travel - camels! Our humped companions guide us through the towering sand dunes, providing us with an unforgettable experience of witnessing the sunset over the Sahara. To cap off this extraordinary adventure, we spend the night in a tented camp, under the twinkling canopy of stars above.

A miniature Marrakech

Hey there Morocco! Today we're pumped to uncover more of this incredible country's hidden gems. Our destination this morning is Taroudant, a small town nestled in the fertile Souss Valley, surrounded by the High and Anti-Atlas mountains. It's like a mini Marrakech, but we won't need too much time to check it out. Let's spend the morning wandering through the souks and snag some awesome local crafts - the perfect time to do so!

Next stop, Agadir

Next up, we're heading towards Taliouine, known as the saffron capital of Africa! We can't pass up the chance to stop here for lunch and savor some dishes made with the "king of spices." After that, we'll hit the road again and head west towards the sea. It's time to bid farewell to the countryside and soak up some ocean views! The ride will take about 3 hours, so let's sit back, relax, and take in the stunning Moroccan scenery. We'll arrive in Agadir in the late afternoon and take some time to explore the town - maybe even find a cozy little spot to grab a bite to eat!

The city of surfers

This morning, after a hearty breakfast, we have just enough time to take a walk on the promenade in Agadir. We then head north following the coast so be prepared to admire yet another kind of scenery - today we enjoy the view of the Atlantic Ocean! We’ll stretch our legs a little in Taghazout, which apparently since the 70s has been the top destination for surfers and those who love freedom. Just enough time to drink a good mint tea and off we go again; next stop: Essaouira!

Walking around Essaouira

We arrive in Essaouira and have a free afternoon to enjoy this town overlooking the ocean. Here there is the famous Medina on the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an example of the European military architecture of the eighteenth century of North Africa. We explore Medina and some other neighbourhoods near the centre and then we are ready to taste some typical dishes of the local cuisine - on the menu tonight is the delicious harira soup, made with chickpeas and lentils!

Fancy a beach day?

What better way to enjoy the last few hours in Essaouira than with a nice quad excursion? So let's don our helmets, jump on a quad with our now most faithful travel companion, and cross the vast expanse of dunes of Essaouira beach. We end this experience with a nice picnic overlooking the sea and relax before resuming our march towards Marrakech.

Let's head back to Marrakech

In the afternoon we get comfortable in our cars for the last stretch of our journey discovering Morocco. The drive back to Marrakech takes about three hours, so let's enjoy these last moments on the Moroccan roads. After so many days outside the city, it will be a bit of a shock to return to the chaos of Marrakech - but that’s what Morocco is all about, many different aspects to discover every day!

Walking around Marrakech

We have a full day to explore and discover Marrakech: we start from Jemaa el Fna Square, the centre of the city. This square is home to a large open-air market, called souk, where you can buy soft fabrics, tasty dates and fragrant spices. We can have our body decorated with henna or have our palm read by a fortune teller. We then move on to Place des Epices, the spice square, and Bahia Palace, a true masterpiece of traditional Moroccan architecture.

Our last Moroccan night

Since this is our last evening here, let’s treat ourselves to a refreshing mint tea on one of the cafés’ terraces around the main square, while we enjoy a beautiful sunset. The evening continues with the farewell dinner, packed full of tasty Moroccan delicacies, and a stroll around the bubbling streets of Marrakech.
