Meteora and Delphi
A Journey to the Monasteries of Meteora and the Sanctuary of Delphi
Good morning, WeRoaders! The time has finally come to visit the monasteries of Meteora—after all, that’s exactly why we traveled all this way! Meteora is a significant center of the Orthodox Church, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. On the slopes of Meteora, 24 monasteries were built, but only 6 are open for visitors today. We will explore 2 of them (depending on the day’s opening times) with a local guide.
After our visit, we’ll set off towards Delphi.
Delphi is perched on a hill at the foot of Mount Parnassus, not far from the Gulf of Corinth. The site is dominated by the sanctuary of Apollo, one of the most important sites of classical Greece, alongside those of Delos and Olympia. During the Mycenaean age, there was a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Gaia (Earth) here, but according to a story by Homer, the god Apollo took possession of the sanctuary, appearing in the form of a dolphin. This is where the name Delphi originates, marking the beginning of the new cult of Delphic Apollo in the last millennium BC.
The sanctuary of Delphi wielded great influence over politics, wars, and the life of classical Greece; many significant decisions in Greek history were guided by the religious authority of Delphic Apollo, interpreted through the oracle by the priests.
Will we also consult the oracle? One thing is for sure: it won’t be able to tell us the lottery numbers!
Included: overnight stay with breakfast, minivan with driver and guided tour of two monasteries in Meteora

Around lunchtime, feeling refreshed by the sea air and with salt still in our hair, we’ll continue our journey to Tolo, where we’re expected to arrive around two in the afternoon. Once there, we’ll spend the entire afternoon soaking up the sun on the beach—after all, Greece is all about the sea! Get ready to unwind, lulled by the gentle waves and the refreshing sea breeze.
